The aim of this project proposal is to design a Middle-school in the south-western suburban area of Wien. This area is going through a major urban transformation to increase the residential density in order to meet with the housing demand around the Austrian Capital. The new neighborhood will require additional infrastructures and public buildings such as schools. The particularity of the competition are the multifunctionality strategy and the floor area requested for the new school. However the site consists of rigid urban limitations which do not allow a large design liberty . To follow these requirements it is necessary to design a compact building stacked on multiple floors with a unique common area in its center.
We decided to dispose of the gymnasium functions in an annex building, placed above business spaces and a car parking, linked with the rest of the school by a closed bridge.
We are inspired by the industrial architecture similar to the gymnasium in Saclay, France designed by studio Muoto. But the use of bio sourced materials and grid repetition are important elements for us to meet with the sustainability challenges.
The main atrium space, placed strategically according to view, sun exposure and functions, integrates a variation on the building’s facade giving a characteristic personality to the new School.
